Hermann Eiselen Ph.D. Research Support Program

Since 2011 the doctoral programs at the Center for Development Research (ZEF) in Bonn and at the Food Security Center in Hohenheim (FSC) have been supported by the Foundation fiat panis in the area of food security and the fight against rural poverty. The promotion of doctoral students will improve the research and implementation capacity in the field of food security and poverty reduction in the medium term, in particular in developing countries and in relevant public sector bodies, science, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. The development of technological and institutional innovations for food security in countries with poor agricultural productivity and a high degree of food deficit and malnutrition are also promoted.

The funding program aims at a general problem in applied research with developing countries: the chronic underfunding of the research of qualified young scientists in the field of food security and rural development. It is explicitly underlined that the requested funding program does not include scholarships, but exclusively provides research funding for doctoral candidates who are selected as highly qualified and are already endowed with a scholarship.

In addition, the Foundation fiat panis supports a number of joint training courses between the Center for Development Research (ZEF) in Bonn and the Food Security Center (FSC) in Hohenheim on important, interdisciplinary qualifications: workshops on knowledge transfer, leadership skills, change management, research ethics and participation at the Food Security Colloquium on the occasion of the World Food Day at the University of Hohenheim.

Since the start in 2011 of the support of the ZEF Doctoral Study Program in Bonn and the doctoral program of the Food Security Center in Hohenheim by the Foundation fiat panis, more than 165 doctoral students have been supported. 131 of the doctoral theses are already successfully completed.
